What is a Unit Study? (from the book)
By way of quick definition, “unit study” means that you incorporate as many different subjects as possible into one area of study. A historical period, historical event, or key person can serve as the springboard for your unit, and from that main theme branch other topics of study beyond history—including geography (physical and cultural), language arts, science, the fine arts, home management, and more. Unit studies also may be centered on a specific character quality, scientific discovery, work of literature, health topic, and so forth. The main focus of the unit study in Ancient China: To the Great Wall...and Beyond will be on the history of China, its major dynasties in particular.
A variety of ages can be taught at the same time using the unit study approach because age-appropriate books can be provided for each grade of student, while the key information or outline of material remains the same for all ages. Unit studies also allow you to employ many different media and resources (books, foods, paintings, videos, models, even plastic construction blocks) in the study....
